Mission and Vision of the USFWC

Mission
The mission of the United States Federation of Worker Cooperatives is to create stable and empowering jobs and worker-ownership through the development of a thriving cooperative movement. We advance worker-owned, -managed, and -governed workplaces through cooperative education, advocacy and development.

Vision
The United States Federation of Worker Cooperatives envisions a democratic society in which workers are in control of the management, governance and ownership of their places of work. Workplaces will uphold the values of empowerment, equity, dignity and mutual respect for all workers without discrimination. Workplaces will offer long-term stable jobs, a living wage and the opportunity for ownership for every worker.

Action
In order to strengthen the position of worker cooperatives and create more democratic jobs the federation will:

  • Facilitate the sharing of information and skills among worker cooperatives.
  • Provide opportunities for information and skill sharing between co-ops and other businesses that work in alignment with USFWC values and practices.
  • Provide and support education and training.
  • Provide business development training, technical assistance and cooperative education to new and existing worker cooperatives.
  • Educate about and refer worker cooperatives to loan funds and other capital resources.
  • Provide business and member services.
  • Promote the worker cooperative model to the broader community.
  • Provide opportunities for networking, collaboration and education through national worker cooperative conferences.
  • Support linkages among local, regional, national and international worker cooperative organizations and conferences.
  • Build alliances within the U.S. and internationally.
  • Advocate for regional, national and international public policy making that supports cooperatives and workers rights.
