Welcome to Co-op Month – Check out this magazine dedicated to Philly Co-ops

This post is written by Corey Reidy, Co-op Development Director at the Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance, a member of the USFWC.

Co-op Month is here!

On October 1, Grid Magazine released their October issue entirely on cooperatives. They have excellent articles on Philly co-ops, featuring many members of the Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance (PACA) and the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives:

There are features on both Weavers Way and Making Worlds Bookstore, as well as an article highlighting five of Philly worker co-ops that folks should know, though there are also many more worth knowing! which include: Home Care Associates, Childspace Daycare Centers, Blackbird Rising, Obvious Agency, and Parula Gardens.

There’s a short article on how to start a co-op, with some quotes from PACA. There’s an article thinking through important questions that we all must ask when in the cooperative ecosystem, which focuses on Mariposa Food Cooperative.

In addition to typical cooperatives, the issue also includes a look at another important ownership model — collective ownership — with the West Philly Tool Library and a story on a critical public ownership entity: SEPTA, Philadelphia’s public transit corporation.

We thank Grid for devoting an issue to co-ops in this co-op month, in the Year of the Cooperative. You can check out all the articles online, subscribe to get a physical copy delivered, or pick one up at various locations.

Corey Reidy (she/her) has been organizing with cooperatives since 2008, and has been a worker-owner of two different cooperatives, as well as a member of multiple user cooperatives. Corey has also been a social justice organizer for nearly two decades, currently focusing on climate justice and abolitionist struggles. The Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance (PACA) is a cooperative whose members are co-ops in the Philadelphia region. PACA is also a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to growing the cooperative economy.
