The Democracy at Work Institute (DAWI) seeks an energetic, experienced, self-directed and collaborative person to join the education and training team of our dynamic national nonprofit organization. Our core work is supporting the expansion of democratic employee ownership as a strategy for racial, gender and economic equity.

DAWI’s education and training team works with a wide range of cooperative and transitioning business managers, members and owners to support them in framing democratic workplace practices and using new tools to support worker participation.  We also provide training to business service providers and worker cooperative developers in ethics and best practices for cooperative small business development, training and transitions.

About the role
The Education and Training Manager works closely with our Education and Training Director to ensure DAWI programs, partners, worker cooperative managers, members and developers learn the tools and frameworks necessary to start and sustain democratic workplaces. This position will teach remotely and in-person, develop curriculum and tools, develop and follow training best practices, support system management, evaluations, and program planning.

We are seeking someone with strong teaching, business finance and communication skills. The right candidate has experience developing and supporting education for and with workers, managers and business developers.

Job Duties

Training – 60%

Provide training support for a suite of DAWI projects; Workers to Owners, Rapid Response Coops, Legacy Fund Businesses, Employee Ownership Cities, US Federation Worker Coops and DAWI consulting clients
Provide support to and work with other DAWI trainers on an as-needed basis on topics related to worker cooperative management, governance and development.
Train managers, transition teams and cooperative members on democratic workplace skills and frameworks, and provide individualized support as needed.
Train cooperative developers on DAWI’s cooperative development project design framework and provide individualized support as needed.
Curriculum and Tools Development – 15%

Develop new or adapt existing curricula to meet client needs.
Develop new tools, methods and materials in collaboration with the training team.
Client Management and Departmental Planning – 15%

Conduct intake on consulting opportunities.
Develop and maintain positive consulting relationships including regular communication, tracking, administration and client evaluations.
Lead project management for consulting clients.
Support business planning and development for DAWI’s consulting and training work, including prospecting new clients, cultivating relationships, strategic analysis and planning for revenue growth.
Program Administration 5%

Update and maintain training and curriculum files and materials.
Manage DAWI’s training website, including updating videos, resources and managing participant engagement.
Coordinate with other DAWI programs to ensure syncing and information-sharing about tools and curricula.
Organizational Participation – 5%

Participate in staff meetings and professional development activities.
Requirements
We are seeking someone with strong teaching, business finance and communication skills. The right candidate has experience developing and supporting education for and with workers, managers and business developers.

Required Education, Experience, Skills

Teaching/training experience: At least two years experience teaching or training adults using participatory and other adult education best practice methods.
Curriculum and tools development: Experience with creating new curricula and/or tools for practical application of learning, including demonstrated ability to develop a learning plan and evaluation systems.
Worker cooperative business development or membership experience. You have worked as a member of a worker cooperative or employee-owned company, or as a cooperative business developer.
Cultural competence and experience working with communities that DAWI serves.
Strong organizational skills: Ability to manage multiple projects at once, stay organized, communicate effectively with the team, and be accountable to the team and partners for deliverables. Strong task-tracking and 100% follow-through on deadlines: able to set priorities, establish realistic deadlines and meet them consistently.
Strong written and oral communication skills across all mediums.
Full competence with basic office tools: Microsoft Office Suite, GSuite, online project management systems, remote filing systems, online/remote meeting tools (We use Slack and Zoom for most communication).
We value emotional intelligence, kindness, and sense of humor. Diplomacy, judgment and discretion are important in this position.
Remote work: You like to work independently and can execute a mix of tasks with self-management systems in place. We expect all staff to use technological tools for remote working and have consistent access to a reliable internet connection.
Flexibility: You are able to make accommodations that suit everyone involved, whether it is meeting time, task deadlines, or priority setting.
Preferred Experience and Skills

Experience writing feasibility studies and business plans.
You are able to teach, and to develop or translate existing materials into Spanish language.
You have managed business finances and/or taught financial management to adults.
You have direct experience coaching and providing services to clients.

DAWI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit movement-based think-and-do tank that expands the promise of cooperative business ownership to communities most directly affected by economic, social, and racial inequality. We do research and advocacy; we develop tools and new models; we train worker-owners and developers; and we convene communities of practice to ensure that further growth in the worker cooperative movement reaches low-income people, BIPOC communities and recent immigrants. We are affiliated with the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives, the national grassroots membership organization.

Schedule and Location
This is a full-time position. We are a remote organization with physical offices in San Francisco and New York, which allows us to have staff all over the country, and to create flexible working hours and locations.

Compensation and Benefits
The starting salary range for this position is $55,000-70,000, depending on experience. DAWI offers medical, dental and vision benefits; generous paid time off; and 4013b plan.
